Where Does Artificial Grass Come From?

If you are thinking about installing artificial grass in your garden, you are probably wondering where it comes from. There is also another question many would like an answer to. Is artificial grass and artificial turf the same thing? Yes, it is. Some of us like to call it artificial grass while others like to call it artificial turf.

How Is Artificial Grass Manufactured?

Artificial turf has been manufactured in the same way since 1965. The process works so why change it? The first company to manufacture artificial grass was a company called Chemstrand. Back then in 1965, they marketed the product as Chemgrass. Let’s be honest, that does not sound quite right. Eventually, the name of the product was changed to Astro-Turf. Perhaps the new name had something to do with the 1960s and 1970s space race.

What Is Artificial Grass Made From?

Artificial grass is made from polyethylene, polypropylene and nylon. If you already have artificial turf in your garden, it is probably made from polyethylene. It is one of the most popular compounds used in the artificial grass industry.

Polyethylene is very durable and easy to work with. Compared to other compounds, it is also a much more flexible material. As you can imagine, suppliers of artificial grass like to have a product that is easy to install. Nobody wants to end up with a lawn that does not look natural. Polyethylene is pliable, looks great, is easy to shape into a natural-looking lawn and is also comfortable to walk on. Polyethylene is manufactured in different grades. Your artificial grass supplier may talk to you about grades C2, C4, C6, and C8. The numbers are an indication of how many carbons are used during the manufacturing process. The most commonly used numbers are C2 and C4. Artificial turfs made from these grades are flexible and retain the colour well.

Polypropylene, on the other hand, is a much stiffer material. When you are looking to cover a sports ground or other heavily used areas, this is a much better choice of turf. Another downside of polypropylene is that it produces a higher static charge. Nylon is another compound used when manufacturing artificial grass. The problem with nylon is that it is more porous. It is not recommended for use in busy areas. If you decide to have a nylon artificial turf installed, you need to be prepared to replace it more often.

Which is the most expensive kind of artificial grass? Polyethylene, it is slightly more expensive. However, it is a durable material and easy to look after for homeowners. Other materials require more maintenance.

In Conclusion

It is always nice to find out more about a material you are going to use in your home and garden. Do your research and make sure you go with the right solution that is going to stand the test of time. Needless to say, it should also be right for your personal circumstances.
